A Homily On Honey Badgers

their real name is Honey-Eater of the Cape

skunk-looking creatures unafraid of a snake

also known as honey badgers who have no fear

of any animal, big or small, who comes near

it’s wise to avoid these cousins of the weasel family

known for being quarrelsome, filthy and smelly

most people think honey is their favorite food

but it’s the bee larvae inside that are being skewed

honey badgers grunt, squeak, hiss and whine

and often leave, when frightened, a smelly trail behind

yes, they do have a sweet tooth for honey too

and they’re fierce fighters unafraid of coming after you!

In The Worlds of Night

when night falls worlds come alive

in dreams and reality

predators stalk the darkness to survive

and the prey becomes a casualty

creatures big and small that move at night

are masters at hiding anywhere

cleverly avoiding the moons light

and assuring their welfare

dreams are also denizens of the night

as people try to rest from a hard day

things like nightmares leave them uptight

causing them dismay

dreams can also be a wonderful experience

sought after by mystics and sages

spiritually enlightening and soulfully intense

dreams and reality are the inheritance of the ages

The Virtues of a Pug

smushed-faced clowns on four paws that capture your heart

pugs in beige and black, they’re all a special breed apart

some people say that pugs are ugly and snort like pigs

I say no way…those pugs will become like your kids

my little puggie Molly is always looking to play

it’s no stretch to say she can play all day

I’d venture to say that pugs are a popular pet

they’re a great companion and that’s a sure bet!

Tribute to George Carlin

the comedian who gave us the seven dirty words you can’t say on TV

was George Carlin, whose brutal honesty appealed to me

attacks by the FCC for use of expletives were thrown out of court

a victory for freedom of speech which the FCC tried to distort

while George is no longer on this earth his words are still alive

he made millions laugh about the absurdity of many things

yet there was a serious message to his acts that still clings

to our memories like fall leaves holding on until the last breeze

stubbornly clinging to his mastery of words and sly journalese

Brand Fever

everyone, and thing, has a brand in this land

products and people seeking to expand

Levi’s, McDonald’s, Coca Cola, and Jeep

all culprits in the corporate branding creep

ambitious people market themselves every day

using their talent and experience as a resume

but some people avoid brands, big and small

because they don’t think branding is good at all!

Kangaroo Versus an AI Go Cart

the gods gathered one day to stage a race

between a Kangaroo and an AI Go Cart in Space

the track was located in the Milky Way

and the race was scheduled to last a day

the Kangaroo’s distant-eating hops set the pace

during the first few hours of the epic race

but the AI Go Cart went into another gear

soon it was watching the kangaroo in it’s rear mirror

to the delight of some of the gods gathered there

who had entered the longshot AI Go Cart on a dare!

On Feeling Different

essay – 160 words

My earliest memories are of feeling different. An alien, an outsider, hiding my inner thoughts carefully so people couldn’t see the real me. So people wouldn’t know that my imagination was a wild beast with no rules.

From an early age, I learned not to outwardly stray from the path of normality laid down for me by my parents. I bowed to reality, but secretly set it aside to explore other worlds, to seek the mysteries of life, and to go where I didn’t think others would.

I still awkwardly navigate from fact to fiction when I write. The idea of other dimensions is real to me, because I’ve been to them many times in my history. Opening doors and stepping through is nothing new to someone who has felt different all their life.

I walk through the world with eyes wide open, hoping to fine other people like me. Seekers unafraid of mysteries and what their imagination can see.

Hero

(Editor’s note: My first monostich. Special thanks to Proletaria for inspiring this humble attempt)

“The hero of Waterloo was last seen riding away, in the wrong direction.”

I Yam, Who I Yam!

Popeye was my kinda guy

a free spirit who says aye! aye!

I yam who I yam, he would say

a phrase that always made my day

the spinach-eating sailor was very strong

always stopping Brutus when he was wrong

Olive Oly was the apple of his eye

but that gal could be fickle and sly

promising kisses and expecting gifts

she was the cause of most of his rifts

but Popeye always came back for more

because it was Olive he did adore

Another Day On The Merry- Go-Round

awakening at the first light of day

I think of the challenges ahead

some with hope and others with dread

it’s never easy getting out of bed

the key, I’m told, is a good attitude

in spite of what may lie ahead

you realize it’s better than being dead

so let your worries go unsaid

life is a merry-go-round

my grandfather use to say

embrace it and have a good day!
