There Were Survivors

When the apocalypse came it looked like the end of humanity but somehow there were survivors. Tic Tok.

We managed to ride out the end days scenario in underground compounds located around the planet. We were the best and brightest. Doctors. Scientists. Mathematicians. Teachers. Archeologists. Physicists. Writers. Our numbers consisted of survivors ready to live a new life. Tic Tok.

We saved the history of mankind on digital devices. Our files included historical photos and a complete History of Art dating back to ancient times. The massive database of knowledge we accumulated was shared in all of the compounds – establishing a common ground that kept us in touch. Tik. Tok.

We kept busy while waiting for the day when we could reemerge onto the earth’s surface safely. We shared stories of our personal lives and how we came into the world. How the world once looked. How we quietly built the compounds and stocked them with necessities. Tik. Toc.

I’m not sure when the trouble started but our population has been decreasing every year for years. Lately it’s every month. We’ve been unable to add to our numbers which is a red flag. It appears despite our wealth of knowledge we didn’t account for a situation like we’re in now. Tik. Tok.

What happened?

We didn’t think to manufacture spare parts. Our circuit boards, wires, video screens, and functionality programs were deteriorating with time. Now I’m the last of the robots in this compound. Tik Tok. Tik Tok.

‘Tis The Season …

Tis the season

of no reason

logic has fled

into the wintery night

on a sled

of lies

that incite

passions unchecked

with a bad effect

upon us all

save us from stupidity

holding so many in thrall

Now we need

a new season

with reason

where truth is told

and knowledge

is treated like gold

Historians

Beneath the rubble of civilizations past

ancient souls cry out to be remembered

from great societies that didn’t last

their wisdom buried in history’s ashes

their lives that passed too fast

who will give those souls peace?

and tell their stories?

of past glories?

historians are the bridges

connecting the past to today

their tireless work

a timeless passion play

***

Be Still

Focus inward if you will

to that inner voice

that whispers be still

listen

breath

inhale

exhale

be open

to what’s

spoken

from the

heart

murmers

in the mind

listen

breath

inhale

exhale

be still

and learn

to be kind

and expand

your mind

Lighten Your Load

are you carrying a rucksack

of worries?

a load of emotional rocks?

a stack of negative stories?

stuck in a mental box?

then it’s time

to lighten your load

and shine

cast away

your worries

enjoy your day

there’s no guarantee

another will come your way

Dance of the Hypocrites

they go through each day

doing the “Hully Gully

in their hypocritical way

they do the “Twist” with facts

holding reality at bay

hypocrites always dance

to the opposite side of sense

doing the “Hokey Pokey”

and a “Tango” on a fence

they go “Gangnam Style

when caught redhanded

they do the “Moonwalk”

down denier’s aisle

you can easily see

a hypocrite

doing the “Monkey

A “Macarena” line forms

when hypocrites gather

defying norms

They do the “Shimmy”

and the “Shake”

whatever it’ll take

to hide what’s true

recognizing the dances

that they do

is a good warning

for you

With These Eyes

I can tell when people tell lies

with these eyes

their body movements a tell

making it easy to see

for an old man like me

decades of experience resides

compartmentally

in my brain

lurking behind my tired eyes

I’ve seen the horror

of war

I keep it behind a door

behind these eyes

I look forward

to each new day

putting aside yesterday

a daily exercise

behind these

still alert

eyes
