Canine Companions

Dog spelled backwards is God

bringing love and loyalty

with every doggie nod

Companions beyond compare

canines adore and protect

following you everywhere

You’re never alone with a dog

because they understand

your inner dialogue

Tempest in Time

Washed up on the shore of depression

barely sane

a tumultuous soul calls out my name

scratchy screams in the storm

of life

a weary survivor of constant strife

no surcease for my sorrow

no hope for the morrow

but I continue to go on

every dawn

every day

wanting to be okay

The Language of Color

The poet paints meaning into every color

each cleverer than the other

Blue is as inspiring as the sky

Purple makes people sigh

Gold is shiny and bold

Sea Green is slimy and cold

Orange is an autumn day

There’s various shades of grey

Yellow is bright and enlightening

Black can be good or frightening

Every color in the rainbow

delivers messages in nature’s road show

A Day in Animal Land

The Bison bellowed when he saw the dog talking with the steer

the cats who were near

whispered secrets that only they could hear

goats bleating as they jumped from one mountain to another

with ease

birds speaking multiple languages in nearby trees

a weasel whistling

a porcupine bristling

on another beautiful spring day

when the creatures like to come out and play

in Animal Land

Fever Dreams

Upon awakening every morning, I feel like I’m going to die

I don’t know how

or even why

but I have fever dreams

that go to such extremes

they make my soul cry

strange symbols fly by

in a multi-colored sky

of my subconscious

as I continue to seek the light

every night

Another Time

a little girl singing in the spring meadows of your mind

her sweet voice soothing your soul with lyrics

from another time

a little boy playing with a toy on a snowy day

his childish antics in your mind’s eye

from another time

a young woman dancing in a play

her grace and beauty in full bloom

from another day

a young man indulging in harmless horseplay

his powerful muscles straining in the summer heat

of another day

an old woman knitting by a warm hearth of clay

her memories embroidered on blankets

from another day

an old man in a winter pathway

looking for his memories

from another day.

A Field of Pumpkins

I dreamt I was lying in a field of pumpkins one October day

watching the orange gourds play

like frisky future Jack-O-Lanterns they had fun

in the warm embrace of the sun

they talked about a harvest moon

that they were expecting soon

when I heard one let out a deep sigh

“What a miserable fate to end up a pie!”

-30-

Cracked

Although he walked among them, they couldn’t see

the fissures, the spiraling cracks and his insanity

he moved among them like a gray ghost seeking normality

all the while having a split-personality

where his alter-ego lived in the virtual reality

of a psychopathic personality

seeking popularity

in all the wrong places
