Don’t Read This

whatever made you look at these lines of cobbled words

stitched together like a tapestry hanging from my imagination

waiting for eternal condemnation?

silly sentences strung out in a parade of useless information

stuck together with super glue and honey – a sweet creation

containing a hidden message that must be lurking near

between adjectives and verbs and visions of a good beer

there lies no motivation for sounding so insincere

it’s simply that

I’m glad you’re here!

***

Humanity Lost

Diversity and equality are building blogs for successful civilizations

as history so clearly tells us in somber tones meant to sound wise

but those qualities are often poorly concealed lies

of patriotism meant to fool the hoi polloi

into treating democracy like a Tinker Toy

Nations rise and fall on realities

versus ideologies

in the end, humans can’t live in peace

we’re no one’s masterpiece

Treatise on Poems

who are poems for?

the wealthy or the poor?

or is it possible

there’s more?

emphatically, yes!

they’re for everyone

to access

poems are gifts to share

with the rest of us

anywhere

who enjoy a poetic flair

watching words take wing

rhyming with everything

flights of imagination

with every narration

comes from poetry

like leaves from a tree

we gather them up

into our memory

Writing Proper Haiku

writing proper haiku

is not an easy thing to do

it takes narrative skills

and editing with no frills

the ability to condense

three lines that make sense

into English to tell a tale

like the holy grail

where, to our surprise

was nothing more than lies

the use of juxtaposition

honoring tradition

in modern haiku

is still the proper thing to do

(Writer’s note: either this poem stunk to high heaven, or it had the worst title I ever gave a poem! My apologies. Guess it was my time to write a clinker! I’ll do my best not to repeat.)

Riffing on Living

205 words – free verse

life in the fast lane of concrete jungles weaving through cities and states seeking altered states and the key to paradise while cities burn from fires caused by climate change and a whole range of environmental disasters brought on by corporate behemoths that breath life into Wall Street’s secrets corridors of power looking down on the average citizen nearly powerless trying to fight Goliath with a cell phone tapped by the FBI and marketers vying for the masses money in cyberspace a dangerous place where saints and sinners trumpet their wares to the unwary visitors responding to special sales for limited times – but wait there’s more – in the pursuit of happiness religions and cults seek converts with promises of saving souls and access to elite Hollywood parties where the wealthy meet to greet one another and brag about big contracts and casting beds while women fight for equality and freedom from perverted movie execs soaked in their huge egos looking for the next star in an industry of dreams where viewers suspend reality to escape a world of lies that have formed like cobwebs in our society holding the average person victim with fake news and rhetoric straight from hell and premiering near you soon.

A Tribute To Lawrence Ferlinghetti

he captured the average American experience

with words woven with activism and skepticism

an insurgent in the literary world with no allegiance

to traditional poetry and using abstract expressionism

he confesses to being an anarchist at heart

encouraging poets to write about political and cultural

aspects of their country like laws and local art

Lawrence Ferlinghetti who turned 100 the other day

still burns brightly in the world of poetry

an icon with plenty left to say

about the world and our society

Tribute to George Carlin

the comedian who gave us the seven dirty words you can’t say on TV

was George Carlin, whose brutal honesty appealed to me

attacks by the FCC for use of expletives were thrown out of court

a victory for freedom of speech which the FCC tried to distort

while George is no longer on this earth his words are still alive

he made millions laugh about the absurdity of many things

yet there was a serious message to his acts that still clings

to our memories like fall leaves holding on until the last breeze

stubbornly clinging to his mastery of words and sly journalese

The Rise of Poetry

Essay – 1 minute read

The traditional gatekeepers of poetry, professors and such, have longed considered themselves quality control experts. Their narrow interpretation of what constitutes worthy works comes with constrictions and different restrictions.

Examples include:, Haiku, Ballad, Stev, Ode, Free verse, Blank verse, thematic, limerick and nursery rhymes. Spoken out loud, they provide powerful images within the confines of each style. A feat many writers haven’t bothered to try, poetry, was once deemed elitist and a byproduct of scholarly snobbery.

But The Beat Generation came along in my time and showed that not all poems have to rhyme and that provocative word pictures could be painted without formal meter or stanza standing in the way. A revolution that is still happening today.

Even more important to me, is that everyone can feel free to write poetry on their own websites or social platforms without conventional publishers dictating terms to them.

This, because of the growing poet population online, is the new Golden Age of Expression

Jonesing for Slang?

100 words –

Let’s shoot the breeze and spill the beans until the cows come home. We can pig out on a piece of cake and do the Aztec two-step in a public velodrome.

It doesn’t always take an ace up your sleeve to deceive, you can make people believe you’re the next best thing to sliced bread, if you use your head. It’s all systems go when you have a bird in hand for a one-night stand.

Just go along for the ride when people think your snide, don’t hide. Slang is here to stay – like rock and roll – it isn’t going away.

Strong Words

100 words –

I like words that are powerful, inspiring, and true.

Don’t you?

Words that bolster beliefs like boulders in a wall. Words that ring large for one and all. Massive words that roll across the landscape like an earthmover leaving the reader in awe.

Words describing mighty deeds tumble from the imagination like wild seeds spreading stories among societies searching for ways to express their inner most desires.

Monumental words mount up until the moment a kingdom rises from its slumbers and listens to the messages missives convey. A new day documented and emailed to eager searchers of weighty words.
