opinions are subject to fact-checks
based upon disbelief
or the PC police
few opinions stand the test of time
and the rest are borderline
people naturally opinionate
it’s in our DNA to debate
you’re either right or wrong
making it hard to get along
opinions have led to war
destroying lives and more
peace-loving people say
it doesn’t have to be this way
100 words – essay
Don’t trust the cat is the number one rule, wise city mice tell their country cousins. Number two is that not all cheese is created equal. Sometimes cheese is deadly bait, and when they find out it’s too late.
The third rule is to stay near quick exits when exploring for food. Mice have modes of communication – squeaks and peeps – that warns them if any danger creeps.
As long as they follow mouse rules they can play night and day.
I hope your not surprised that mice are so organized. At some point in evolution they became unionized.

I still remember when the ’32 Ford Coupe ruled the road for street racers in the fifties and early sixties.
It’s hoodless engine and nitro tank strapped to the grill gleaming with polished chrome and promises of power were worshiped by teenagers who gathered in groups to watch the street rods race on lonely roads.
Butch haircuts competed with James Dean’s classic looking hair. Jeans and t-shirts everywhere. Girls wore pumps with pleated skirts and short bobbed hair. Teenagers were going steady with class rings and varsity jackets. Wolf Man Jack called the races at the right places and passed messages on to lovers and the lonely.
The need for speed was a tremendous thirst that made local heroes famous nationally when they came in first. These lords of the road have long disappeared or sold out.
Memories can be so poignant.
there’s no time to stop or hesitate
or to contemplate your fate
the line must keep moving along
no sense of right or wrong
the line keeps moving everyday
never making any headway
in a society of strangers
afraid of dangers
lines are crossed and people die
not even knowing why
everyone keeps moving the line
looking for a sign
a guiding light
through the dark night
for inspiration
and salvation
he tries to rescue feral and lost cats every day
wandering streets and every alleyway
prepared to help any stray
that comes his way
the cat man’s house is full of felines invited to stay
he doesn’t mind his sobriquet
his cat friends never lead him astray
as he goes about his eventful day
the people who spend their time really communicating
are taking an important path towards eliminating hating
learning to have a successful conversation
is the way to reinvigorate a polarized nation
it’s important young and old listen to one another
instead of stepping on words disrespecting the other
for civility to return to our divided society
we need to call out destructive impropriety
It needs to stop

Then we can talk
when ancient mariners tell tales of things they see at sea
mermaids come up a lot, half woman, half fish, and pretty
without so much as blushing they praise their mammaries
the old sea dogs smile with their imaginative memories
there’s stories of mermaids told throughout history
their true intentions for sailors always a mystery
mermaids, salty dogs claim, sometimes go ashore
falling in love with men for evermore
it all started with the great mechanic in the sky

to build the first car to deify
It was powered with steam
soon only a rich man’s dream
and the mythology of cars was born
birthing a pantheon of gods to adorn
Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge, Studebaker
each worshiped as a moneymaker
spawning Lords of the Road
unrestricted by any code
devotees all of car mythology
and all of it’s terminology
deciples driving at all speeds
unconcerned with other’s needs
followers of self-driving cars
dreaming of a track to Mars
while the great mechanic in the sky
looks on with an approving eye
do you ever get criticized for what you eat?
or dressing sloppy and not being neat?
then you’re probably feeling the heat
from the critics in your life and on the street
our hopes and our desires are fragile things
that need nurturing, not a critics barbed stings
using words like weapons and their voices like slings
critics treat your ideals and habits like verbal playthings
but you can make sure the your critics don’t succeed
when they talk trash about you, pay them no heed
be the master of your own ship and don’t concede
to naysayers and enemies who only want to mislead
we’re all going to feel heat along our chosen way
how we stand up to our detractors determines our day
we’re all different and have a variety of games we play
in essence, life is too damn short not to have your say!
our society has phonies to the left and right
truth is shunned and kept out of the limelight
getting real in these chaotic times is no easy task
everyone in the country is hiding behind a mask
deciding what is right or wrong is a real chore
it’s difficult to know who to abhor or adore
getting real is becoming harder every day
because people worry about what to say
it takes confidence and purpose to get real
sometimes it also takes nerves of steel
