A Trail In The Snow

The temperature was so low

it froze the newly fallen snow

Memorializing footprints on a trail

under the moon’s glow

It’s hard to tell where it will go

it’s a mystery we’ll never know

footprints of a man or beast?

or a reflection of a shadow?

Poetic Tips To Writing Your Autobiography

Let me state for the record that I haven’t written my autobiography and you’d probably be smart not to listen to me

because you continue to read this missive promising a positive evaluation of your life by simple grammatical manipulation, it’s time for exploration

What is the one thing you want people to remember you for? One glorious achievement or more? Begin your tome with tales of yore

when you sailed the seas of life and road the winds of strife, and how you were a good husband, or wife

Make sure to save space for those favorite songs that always took you to another place

Let the world know how unique you are even though you’re not famous or a movie star

another consideration is when you go on a writing spree who do you think your readership will be?

don’t forget to share your friends and family in this autobiography if you don’t want people to think your writing a hagiography

Paean to a Pipe

Since ancient days man has puffed on pipes

seeking knowledge and solace

with all types

from wood to pumice

from steel to glass

from copper to brass

a receptacle for opium tars

a way to smoke grass

under the stars

pipe dreams throughout history

have kept a lot of people happy

Pay Attention To Me!

The homeless man cries out “Pay attention to me” to a passerby that cannot see his misery!

The dictator demands “Pay attention to me!” or suffer indignities in spite of your pleas

Babies cries translated into “Pay attention to me!” brings good parents running instantly

When a dog barks and wags his tail happily he’s telling you to “Pay attention to me!”

Sometimes a person’s eyes reveal a hidden plea asking you to “Pay attention to me!” hopefully and silently.

The poor in the world dream of equality and ask governments ruled by the wealthy to “Pay attention to me!

In reality we all have an angel and a devil saying “Pay attention to me!” and who we pick is who we’ll be.

I’m Waiting

You know I’m waiting for Armageddon to come and go

because we’re heading there

Climatologists warn there’ll be nowhere to go

and we won’t be able to breath the air

I’m waiting for America to experience an awakening

in civility

A season of reasoning

that’ll restore our nations stability

I’m waiting for a new era of hope

when all races come together in peace

and nationalities learn to cope

and all of the hostilities cease

I’m waiting for a new day

behind my computer

looking for a positive pathway

a self-appointed troubleshooter

I’m waiting to ride into the sunset

to see a stairway to heaven

to learn the mysteries of the internet

and to spiritual progression

And, I’ll keep waiting…

Jonesing for Slang?

100 words –

Let’s shoot the breeze and spill the beans until the cows come home. We can pig out on a piece of cake and do the Aztec two-step in a public velodrome.

It doesn’t always take an ace up your sleeve to deceive, you can make people believe you’re the next best thing to sliced bread, if you use your head. It’s all systems go when you have a bird in hand for a one-night stand.

Just go along for the ride when people think your snide, don’t hide. Slang is here to stay – like rock and roll – it isn’t going away.

An Ode To Spirits

100 words –

Here’s to the Angel’s Share of Irish spirits which inspires scribes to sing of their merits!

Long may aged whiskey be praised as the nectar of gods in the pantheon of booze.

Hear me then, alcoholic spirits!

The path to heaven is near, and it’s not a from a low-calorie beer. The whiskey spirits that reside in an aged oak barrel are potent and playful when near.

Libations to ancient drunken deities have made the daily worship of spirits a man’s right. A great excuse for a party every night.

Hail to whiskey spirits everywhere! ‘Tis of thee, I sing.

Blind Faith

100 words –

How can faith be blind when its entwined with your heart and mind?

Have you never seen a miracle, or had a magic moment of strength in trying times? Or read between the lines for hopeful signs?

The ability to have faith, when all else fails, makes for inspiring tales.

You don’t have to hold or see faith, it’s embedded in your heart in a safe place. Summoned, it gives you hope where there is no trace with a reassuring embrace.

Yet, some believe blind faith can lead us down the wrong path in life, leaving us with only strife.

Love Is A Rose

100 words –

The tricky part of love, as new lovers know, is what makes love continue to grow?

First love is like a red rose in bloom. It’s essence, an intoxicating perfume. But it comes with a warning that if the rose wilts: there’ll be thorns that draw blood and tears. Rejection is a hidden fear.

Love through the years is an obtainable goal when soul mates nurture that first rose with mutual respect and open devotion juxtaposed.

Lovers that learn the secret to staying in love still see stars in one another’s eyes, and know that they are each others prize.

Growing Up

100 words –

Growing up is a paradox. A mystery to me.

An oddity with its inconsistency, because aging is both a gift and a curse.

Innocence and youth combine in exploration through a vivid imagination. No restraints on the confines of reality. No door closed. No thought unthinkable.

As age settles in, our experiences in the real world become mundane, as we learn that too much imagination may lead to people thinking we’re insane.

Doors once open to the mind, disappear in the daily grind. Bogged down by hard science and reality. Lost in logic and banality. Unoriginality is the final casualty.
