The Lighter Side of History

when technology found a way to start a flame with a flick of the finger

the lighter emerged like a metal Prometheus sharing the secret of fire

with designs that reflected the times, lighters lit the way for cigarette and cigar smokers to conveniently fire up wherever they were

the styles evolved over the years reflecting society’s luxuries and utilities

from the start, lighters have told a story about their owners history

carrying their burdens for the world to see

lighters have more purposes now than ever before

they’re cheap, flashy, and in every store

lighters can be works of fine art

or cartoonish art

there’s so many designs to see

that reflect our history

I leave you with the following three…

Gold Fever

In the beginning…

mankind sought gold, a precious metal capable of destroying civilizations and creating new one’s from their ashes …

he works tirelessly in his search for gold

the miner willingly take risks and is bold

as his fever for the yellow metal soldifies

he never keeps his eyes off of the prize

but

gold fever turns good men into bad guys

willing to kill and tell numerous lies

it’s glitter

sets hearts a twitter

it’s weights

seals fates

kingdoms fall

big and small

but

men will always lust

for that glittering gold dust

or dream of that mother lode

putting them on a yellow brick road

with luxuries that’ll pave their way

to a better life until their last day

Looking In The Mirror

at first glance baby laughs or cries

when she looks in the mirror

and sees her eyes

but as the years go by

she forms a relationship

and greets her visage

in friendship

with selfies

and a discerning eye

looking to defy

age while still youthful

and beautiful

with cosmetics that lie

looking in the mirror

can begin

and end

with fear

but in-between

that mirror

must be near!

There’s Got To Be More

chocolate ice cream and fudge sprinkled with a strawberry glaze, reading books, watching movies, playing board games on boring days,

dancing under the light of the moon, swimming naked in a hidden lagoon, wearing a funny costume

becoming a parent, politician, or playwright, creating a website, swimming in eternity pools all night,

prizes for running, jumping, and winning at Jeopardy, traveling to memorable places like France and Normandy, flying in planes that only hold three,

riding camels and horses in an exotic land, witnessing Yellowstone National Park’s geysers firsthand, walking on Mali’s white sand

hiking through the jungles of Peru, riding in a canoe, and learning Spanish too,

going to sports events, eating cabbage after it ferments, and living in tents,

but there’s got to be more

on some distant shore

my soul cries out

forevermore

Consequences

we cannot hide from our deeds

whether they’re good or bad

our actions have consequences

that either leave us happy or sad

the life moves we make

affect our journey

and the roads we take

a good path

or a mistake

call it karma

or call it fate

everything you do

comes back to you

love

or hate

Dance of the Butterflies

aerial acrobats flutter high

into the bright blue sky

doing the dance of the butterfly

multi-colored wings with eyes

the beauty of the butterflies

they put on a stunning display

every day

a living bouquet

a riot of colors that please the eye

watching them fly

their presence does beautify

the flowers they fortify

butterflies

butterflies

butterflies

The View From Eternity

souls sitting on sheer cliffs

like birds of prey

night and day

for eternity

their view goes on forever

unobstructed by reality

universes unfold like flowers

amidst meteor showers

a truly stunning display

in many a galaxy

far far away

In The Center

what’s in your center?

an enlightening epiphany

or more?

discovering your inner core?

a place to safely explore?

some say

the soul is your center

and gateway

to your spirit

that follows a pathway

up a celestial stairway

to heaven

but I wouldn’t know

I have a wayward soul

that wanders alone

seeking the center

of the universe

and it’s secrets

but

I still wonder why

I can never go home

no matter how hard I try

The Dap

there’s many ways to greet one another

when we get together

hugs and handshakes

have been around forever

there are other ways that are clever

like the dap

which is a slow motion slap

in an intricate pattern of bumps

from one closed fist to the other

a common greeting for a soul brother

the dap

was born in shared strife

as a way of re-affirming life

the dap

a positive way

to get through the day

a comforting display

of brotherhood

back in the day

Treatise on Poems

who are poems for?

the wealthy or the poor?

or is it possible

there’s more?

emphatically, yes!

they’re for everyone

to access

poems are gifts to share

with the rest of us

anywhere

who enjoy a poetic flair

watching words take wing

rhyming with everything

flights of imagination

with every narration

comes from poetry

like leaves from a tree

we gather them up

into our memory
