Early Memories

some early memories are gardens of delight

others are not so serene like getting into a fight

making Revelle car models like Ed Roth’s SuperFink

was a favorite hobby because I didn’t have to think

I raced on narrow red skateboards with metal wheels

while dreaming of someday having my own automobiles

my imagination was unfettered with too many facts

spending my time playing with all kinds of knick-knacks

countless hours were spent imitating TV heroes

in plots with pals featuring dramatic death throes

my memories of those early days

of childish beliefs and pretend plays

are still companions in my old age

and are still a pleasure to engage

Parrot Parade in Paradise

the wise old Gray parrot lined up the young Senegal parrots

at the edge of the jungle’s lush canopy

on the sturdy limbs of a mahogany tree

It was time for the annual parrot parade

and its subsequent parrot serenade

featuring Red-bellied parrots

and Timneh parrots

and Cape parrots

and Bown-headed parrots

and yellow fronted parrots

and Niam-Niam parrots

and Meyer’s parrots

and Ruppell’s parrots

while the Burrowing parrots

very few people even know

about this fabulous show

where to be concise

is in paradise

Epiphanies Don’t Always Please

sudden revelations and insights can be stifled by stupidity and jealousy

there’s always doubters that don’t see what others see

new ideas are often met with controversy

the sceptics scorn unaplogetically

visions kicked aside like debris

in human history

only

there will always be

a person with a sense of destiny

who will have an epiphany

that will set us free

A Tribute To Lawrence Ferlinghetti

he captured the average American experience

with words woven with activism and skepticism

an insurgent in the literary world with no allegiance

to traditional poetry and using abstract expressionism

he confesses to being an anarchist at heart

encouraging poets to write about political and cultural

aspects of their country like laws and local art

Lawrence Ferlinghetti who turned 100 the other day

still burns brightly in the world of poetry

an icon with plenty left to say

about the world and our society

Mermaid Mammaries

when ancient mariners tell tales of things they see at sea

mermaids come up a lot, half woman, half fish, and pretty

without so much as blushing they praise their mammaries

the old sea dogs smile with their imaginative memories

there’s stories of mermaids told throughout history

their true intentions for sailors always a mystery

mermaids, salty dogs claim, sometimes go ashore

falling in love with men for evermore

On Feeling Different

essay – 160 words

My earliest memories are of feeling different. An alien, an outsider, hiding my inner thoughts carefully so people couldn’t see the real me. So people wouldn’t know that my imagination was a wild beast with no rules.

From an early age, I learned not to outwardly stray from the path of normality laid down for me by my parents. I bowed to reality, but secretly set it aside to explore other worlds, to seek the mysteries of life, and to go where I didn’t think others would.

I still awkwardly navigate from fact to fiction when I write. The idea of other dimensions is real to me, because I’ve been to them many times in my history. Opening doors and stepping through is nothing new to someone who has felt different all their life.

I walk through the world with eyes wide open, hoping to fine other people like me. Seekers unafraid of mysteries and what their imagination can see.

The Rise of Poetry

Essay – 1 minute read

The traditional gatekeepers of poetry, professors and such, have longed considered themselves quality control experts. Their narrow interpretation of what constitutes worthy works comes with constrictions and different restrictions.

Examples include:, Haiku, Ballad, Stev, Ode, Free verse, Blank verse, thematic, limerick and nursery rhymes. Spoken out loud, they provide powerful images within the confines of each style. A feat many writers haven’t bothered to try, poetry, was once deemed elitist and a byproduct of scholarly snobbery.

But The Beat Generation came along in my time and showed that not all poems have to rhyme and that provocative word pictures could be painted without formal meter or stanza standing in the way. A revolution that is still happening today.

Even more important to me, is that everyone can feel free to write poetry on their own websites or social platforms without conventional publishers dictating terms to them.

This, because of the growing poet population online, is the new Golden Age of Expression

Slipping Away

100 words

She opened her eyes and pushed away the darkness of eternity. Not yet ready to submit to that unknown journey. She embraced her life for one more day.

Happy memories gave her strength to ignore her dying body. Her pale eyes still reflected determination and an active imagination.

Her fierce soul fought to stay one more day. She would not let her life slip away silently like it never happened.

Grasping for each hour like a sinking swimmer she held on until the next dawn when her soul let go leading her towards a bright glow and an eternal rainbow.
