Graffiti In High C

golden lightning bolts streaking along ghetto walls like a snake in the Garden of Babylon intent on conveying anarchistic values to the viewers who gaze upon the colorful buildings in shock and awe...

graffiti in high C playing in the neighborhood

it’s art to the homeboys who make noise while spraying their gang names and playing games and it’s all understood

graffiti in high C playing in every city

the world is crazy

about an artist called Banksy

who secretly

paints murals of damnation in every nation

but the critics don’t get it

because they think it’s about money and fame, but graffiti’s real message is not so tame, it’s a reality check warning things will not always remain the same

Requiem for a Hoarder

decades of newspapers and magazines cluttered every room, silent witnesses to bygone eras, nestled alongside a lifetime of eclectic collections in the gathering gloom

when the coroner came to collect the old man, his worn-out body in his favorite chair in front of a fan, he was surrounded with trinkets and displays from his good old days

every room was piled high with one man’s treasure yet another man’s junk, standing lamps, piles of clothes from ages past that stunk worse than a skunk

boxes and crates with no labels butted against couches and tables, towers of books with subjects ranging from science to early fables, rolls of cables, and an assortment of turntables

souvenirs from other countries, plastic children’s toys that still made noise, clocks off all kinds, dried food, ancient weather vines, and assorted other sundries

missing were photos of family, a lonely man severed from humanity, living in an alternate reality, his life a mere triviality, his collections becoming his center of gravity

they said the old man had a mental disorder, a condition not unknown to many people trying to install order into their chaotic life, and turning into a hoarder

Found a Nickel One Day

back in the black-and-white 50’s, money went a long way

so that’s why I was thrilled to find a nickel on the street one day

I thought about things I could buy that would be handy

and narrowed it down to what interested me most…candy!

Mar’s Bars, M&M’s, Snickers, Atomic Fireballs, and Paydays

were just some the favorites that came to mind

and Butterfingers, Clark Bars, and Bit-O-Honeys

Peter Paul Mounds, Baby Ruth, and Sugar Babies

Oh Henry! Necco’s, and Zero bars

my head swam with all of the possibilities

among those sugary stars

when it came to the moment of truth

I took that nickel and bought a Baby Ruth

The Hitchhiker and the UFO

some people are meant to travel by whatever means

cars, trucks, buses, biking,

trains, planes, or hitchhiking

which was one man’s favorite mode

to take off a load

traveling free

across the country

was the only way to go

until one day when

the hitchhiker met a UFO

which offered him a ride

to wherever he wanted to go

so he took a quick tour of the galaxy

to see what wonders he could see

like the red dunes of Mars

and the shooting stars

with their ancient history

but the time soon came

to go back home again

with new traveling tales

of space and cosmic trails

Gold Fever

In the beginning…

mankind sought gold, a precious metal capable of destroying civilizations and creating new one’s from their ashes …

he works tirelessly in his search for gold

the miner willingly take risks and is bold

as his fever for the yellow metal soldifies

he never keeps his eyes off of the prize

but

gold fever turns good men into bad guys

willing to kill and tell numerous lies

it’s glitter

sets hearts a twitter

it’s weights

seals fates

kingdoms fall

big and small

but

men will always lust

for that glittering gold dust

or dream of that mother lode

putting them on a yellow brick road

with luxuries that’ll pave their way

to a better life until their last day

Looking In The Mirror

at first glance baby laughs or cries

when she looks in the mirror

and sees her eyes

but as the years go by

she forms a relationship

and greets her visage

in friendship

with selfies

and a discerning eye

looking to defy

age while still youthful

and beautiful

with cosmetics that lie

looking in the mirror

can begin

and end

with fear

but in-between

that mirror

must be near!

There’s Got To Be More

chocolate ice cream and fudge sprinkled with a strawberry glaze, reading books, watching movies, playing board games on boring days,

dancing under the light of the moon, swimming naked in a hidden lagoon, wearing a funny costume

becoming a parent, politician, or playwright, creating a website, swimming in eternity pools all night,

prizes for running, jumping, and winning at Jeopardy, traveling to memorable places like France and Normandy, flying in planes that only hold three,

riding camels and horses in an exotic land, witnessing Yellowstone National Park’s geysers firsthand, walking on Mali’s white sand

hiking through the jungles of Peru, riding in a canoe, and learning Spanish too,

going to sports events, eating cabbage after it ferments, and living in tents,

but there’s got to be more

on some distant shore

my soul cries out

forevermore

Consequences

we cannot hide from our deeds

whether they’re good or bad

our actions have consequences

that either leave us happy or sad

the life moves we make

affect our journey

and the roads we take

a good path

or a mistake

call it karma

or call it fate

everything you do

comes back to you

love

or hate

The Dap

there’s many ways to greet one another

when we get together

hugs and handshakes

have been around forever

there are other ways that are clever

like the dap

which is a slow motion slap

in an intricate pattern of bumps

from one closed fist to the other

a common greeting for a soul brother

the dap

was born in shared strife

as a way of re-affirming life

the dap

a positive way

to get through the day

a comforting display

of brotherhood

back in the day

In The Age of The Sage

long before the final war

when forests were still green

and the waters in the rivers

ran blue

there was an age of wisdom

when a sage made his debut

teaching people the right thing to do

he appeared before young and old

and those that were smart

soon did as they were told

he gave them laws to live by

stressing equality

but these laws they chose to defy

and the sage went back into the sky

and mankind discovered the horror of war

and nothing was the same anymore
