it’s too easy to build a mental wall
a barrier to all things big and small
when we get carried away with ideology
and the politics of the day
communication is cornered by fear
when a person believes everything they hear
tossing logic aside to build a mental wall
has been many a man and woman’s downfall
a wall keeps knowledge out
leaving the builder with doubt
about what is right or wrong
and what’s weak and what’s strong
so don’t burden your brain
with barriers that could drive you insane
riding the wind like a bird
the ground far below blurred
but it’s no deterrent
for the easy glider riding the wind’s calm current
with a view of the beautiful world below
he knows he can land where he wants to go
the easy glider cruises airways defying death
knowing it could be his last breath
defiantly setting aside fear
high in the atmosphere
to experience what few others see
that high altitude beauty
there’s a ballad about two crazy guys
called Hotfoot and Thunder Thighs
who made people roar with laughter
and were often sought after
for their ability to make you laugh or cry
their very presence could electrify
they traveled on country trails
and loved to tell funny tales
both free as could be
the world their marquee
these guys were something to see
pack your bag and let’s go
it’s traveling time
don’t ya know?
It doesn’t matter
where we go
what country we see
or chateau
it’s about the adventure
don’t ya know?
escape your status quo
in exotic lands
or a hidden archipelago
the decision is yours
don’t ya know?
I climbed out of the box one day
unafraid of what people would say
leaving behind conventions
with good intentions
gone astray
my old legs with gimpy knees and gait
don’t allow me to move freely
because they ache
but it doesn’t stop me
from dancing in my mind
where I’m free
of earthly constraints
and physical limitations
that bring complaints
but I hear rock and roll
and keep on dancing
to please my soul!
when they came and took away his Irish whiskey
he stood up to them and said you can’t do this to me
when they came to take his driver’s license away
he warned them and said I’ll get it back someday
when they came after his ’49 Chevrolet one night
he was waiting for them and they got into a fight
when they came after his marijuana field
he made a deal to share the harvest’s yield
when his freedom was subject to a bogus law
the pending injustice was the last straw
he withdrew from civilization
and went into hibernation
time was lost when earth’s clocks rebelled
against constraints man’s science brought to bear
triggering deafening alarms and chimes everywhere
shattering clocks of every type and style
leaving broken timekeepers behind in a pile
of wristwatches
pocket watches
novelty watches
and other mechanical cousins
products of man’s efforts to capture time
such impunity
bending universal physics like salt water taffy
in order to control society
making people account for every hour of the day
and when to pray
until cosmic forces finally intervened
against the invention by human beings
as we all know, opinions are like assholes
we all have one…
in a world of critics and skeptics
opinions are subject to fact-checks
based upon disbelief
or the PC police
few opinions stand the test of time
and the rest are borderline
people naturally opinionate
it’s in our DNA to debate
you’re either right or wrong
making it hard to get along
opinions have led to war
destroying lives and more
peace-loving people say
it doesn’t have to be this way
do you ever get criticized for what you eat?
or dressing sloppy and not being neat?
then you’re probably feeling the heat
from the critics in your life and on the street
our hopes and our desires are fragile things
that need nurturing, not a critics barbed stings
using words like weapons and their voices like slings
critics treat your ideals and habits like verbal playthings
but you can make sure the your critics don’t succeed
when they talk trash about you, pay them no heed
be the master of your own ship and don’t concede
to naysayers and enemies who only want to mislead
we’re all going to feel heat along our chosen way
how we stand up to our detractors determines our day
we’re all different and have a variety of games we play
in essence, life is too damn short not to have your say!
