Little Red Riding Hood in the 21st Century

(184 words -Flash Fiction/Poetry)

They called her Little Red in Sedona, Arizona where crystal-gazers told the fortunes of tourists who came to see the famous red sandstone hills beauty, that explodes in orange and red splashes of brilliant colors when the sun rises, or sets.

Little Red was from the barrio on the wrong side of town, a collection of homeless people who gathered around, helping one another, like a sister and brother, to survive in a merciless economy of the 21st century…

The local homies who respected her gig of taking from the rich and giving it to the poor, had a good rapport with the Harley-riding Little Red who stayed ahead of the law gaining the awe of all the local gangs…

One day Little Red went to see her grandma who lived by the sea, to see if everything was the way it was supposed to be, when she discovered an anomaly that led her to believe an imposter was there to deceive…

Little Red hopped on her Harley and headed for open country determined to be free from the constraints of fairytales and history.

In Praise of Hobbies

we all need a hobby for our happy place

a refuge from our daily routine

another way to express our ourselves

by playing a guitar or a tambourine

crafting clever things out of clay

writing in a journal or writing a poem

free to express yourself in any way

there’s no boundaries

for hobbies

Is what I’m trying to say

spend time for yourself

and make your day

Hat Man Do

I once knew a chap

who wore a cap

when he wasn’t wearing

another hat

made from canvas

or something

like that

I called him

Hat Man Do

because he

always looked cool

in hats of every design

rocking Derby’s

to top hats

all the time

Ain’t It Grand?

I knew an old lady who use to say

Ain’t it grand?

Every day

about subjects big and small

on local people

and the town hall

her positive attitude

on all subjects

earned everyone’s gratitude

and the local newspaper ran

her column about the community

and her love for this land

readers looked forward every week

to read about their town’s activities

that were so unique

alas!

all good things come to an end

but she’ll always be remembered

as a godsend

Found a Nickel One Day

back in the black-and-white 50’s, money went a long way

so that’s why I was thrilled to find a nickel on the street one day

I thought about things I could buy that would be handy

and narrowed it down to what interested me most…candy!

Mar’s Bars, M&M’s, Snickers, Atomic Fireballs, and Paydays

were just some the favorites that came to mind

and Butterfingers, Clark Bars, and Bit-O-Honeys

Peter Paul Mounds, Baby Ruth, and Sugar Babies

Oh Henry! Necco’s, and Zero bars

my head swam with all of the possibilities

among those sugary stars

when it came to the moment of truth

I took that nickel and bought a Baby Ruth

There’s Got To Be More

chocolate ice cream and fudge sprinkled with a strawberry glaze, reading books, watching movies, playing board games on boring days,

dancing under the light of the moon, swimming naked in a hidden lagoon, wearing a funny costume

becoming a parent, politician, or playwright, creating a website, swimming in eternity pools all night,

prizes for running, jumping, and winning at Jeopardy, traveling to memorable places like France and Normandy, flying in planes that only hold three,

riding camels and horses in an exotic land, witnessing Yellowstone National Park’s geysers firsthand, walking on Mali’s white sand

hiking through the jungles of Peru, riding in a canoe, and learning Spanish too,

going to sports events, eating cabbage after it ferments, and living in tents,

but there’s got to be more

on some distant shore

my soul cries out

forevermore

Treatise on Poems

who are poems for?

the wealthy or the poor?

or is it possible

there’s more?

emphatically, yes!

they’re for everyone

to access

poems are gifts to share

with the rest of us

anywhere

who enjoy a poetic flair

watching words take wing

rhyming with everything

flights of imagination

with every narration

comes from poetry

like leaves from a tree

we gather them up

into our memory

Obo the Clown

he was young when he started clowning around

the world his theater in the round

he wasn’t the kind of guy who ever got down

I’m talking about Obo the Clown

he was known for his funny jokes

and appealed to all kinds of folks

by all accounts he was always merry

when talking comedy he was a visionary

he enjoyed playing the clown for the day

and being on public display

the best thing about Obo the Clown

is that everyone wanted him around

Writing Proper Haiku

writing proper haiku

is not an easy thing to do

it takes narrative skills

and editing with no frills

the ability to condense

three lines that make sense

into English to tell a tale

like the holy grail

where, to our surprise

was nothing more than lies

the use of juxtaposition

honoring tradition

in modern haiku

is still the proper thing to do

(Writer’s note: either this poem stunk to high heaven, or it had the worst title I ever gave a poem! My apologies. Guess it was my time to write a clinker! I’ll do my best not to repeat.)

Food Party

I went to a food party the other day

with culinary masterpieces on display

all the major food groups were there

the savory aroma was without compare

Boston steamed clams and Dixie yams

mingled with Virginia bred hams

potatoes and squash sat side-by-side

foie gras and other snacks with stuff inside

sweetmeats, donuts, and other bakery delights

took me to new gastronomical heights

it was the kind of foody party

where you had to be ready to eat hearty
