Who Cares?

c’mon, let’s be real

who cares about trivial facts

that are supposed to be a big deal?

a Hollywood star has a baby

whose name fans say is crazy

the royal family visited a park

and the children thought it a lark

the latest study found

that marmots are proud

the trending activity

is oversensitivity

c’mon…who cares

about millionaires?

or conspiracies?

or political memes

with hateful themes?

Who cares what others do?

As long as they don’t hurt you?

or ruin your day

and take something away?

who cares about others

unless their brothers or mothers?

who cares about anything at all

however big and however small?

Hats Off To Hats!

we cover a bald or hairy head

with every conceivable material

from metal to heavy thread

some hats are the best way

to show power

and make underlings cower

some people say

hats show the world who we are

whether normal or bizarre

still others say

it’s the best way to shield your head

from the sun which can turn it red

hats are always going to be around

they’re very much part of society

and there’ll always be a variety

so hats off to hats in history

may they always be

important and silly!

Outside The Box

I climbed out of the box one day

unafraid of what people would say

leaving behind conventions

with good intentions

gone astray

The Last Straw

when they came and took away his Irish whiskey

he stood up to them and said you can’t do this to me

when they came to take his driver’s license away

he warned them and said I’ll get it back someday

when they came after his ’49 Chevrolet one night

he was waiting for them and they got into a fight

when they came after his marijuana field

he made a deal to share the harvest’s yield

when his freedom was subject to a bogus law

the pending injustice was the last straw

he withdrew from civilization

and went into hibernation

A Close Look At Opinions

as we all know, opinions are like assholes

we all have one…

in a world of critics and skeptics

opinions are subject to fact-checks

based upon disbelief

or the PC police

few opinions stand the test of time

and the rest are borderline

people naturally opinionate

it’s in our DNA to debate

you’re either right or wrong

making it hard to get along

opinions have led to war

destroying lives and more

peace-loving people say

it doesn’t have to be this way

Getting The Edge

100 words –

Everyone tries to get the edge sometime.

You know what I mean. The old leg up. Getting over someone. Vying to be the first or last. Cutting in line. Buying a faster car. The competitive edge. Close to the edge of sanity in the pursuit to win.

Edgy behavior transforming into cults is common in our culture. Pulling up to the edge of a cliff thrills as eternity teeters, and you either live or die. There’s myriad ways to get an edge. Not all are deadly.

Just remember the edge is a two-sided sword with no concern for the seeker.

A Paean For Trash

100 words –

What you call trash is another person’s treasure. Be not proud throwaway consumer, for you created trash as surely as Auguste Rodin was a sculptor without peer.

Leftovers have a future when imagination is given free rein. Digging through ancient trash gives us insights into other cultures and what they used on a daily basis. It puts us in touch with the common man who history rudely ignores in favor of kings and queens.

Alley cats fight over scraps of food mingled with trash.

What a tale my trash tells until my wife can stand it no longer, and yells!

Dawn of the Gods

In a time before time was even kept, the gods assembled on earth.

They came from throughout the universe, and galaxies far away. Each a splendid specimen of their race seeking dominion over the man creatures crawling out of caves.

The competition turned to war as the gods fought in the sky and on the earth. Conquering gods rose, and fell, with civilizations. Their otherworldly presence having influenced cultures from many nations.

The gods could be bloody, or benign.

Very few gods are worshipped today. Most have been slain by atheists. The end time draws near for the rest.

Immigrant

I spied a young illegal immigrant lying in the street

badly beat

with bloody feet

asylum dreams crushed into the concrete

with nothing to eat

his goal incomplete

his hopes in full defeat

with nowhere to retreat

he quietly died there in the heat

The Philosopher

“It’s time,” his executioner said.

He knew he was paying the price for making prominent Athenian’s look like fools. His supposed crime; not believing in the gods of the state.

His wisdom, once sought after throughout the civilized world, did not save him from his fate.  Justice and the pursuit of goodness led him to this last moment on earth.

He became the purifying remedy for Athens’ misfortunes despite his contributions to the state. The sacrificial goat. But he had the last laugh, eternal fame for his wisdom.

“Drink this,” the executioner offered, handing Socrates the cup of poison hemlock.
