Living In A Redwood Tree

there was a young woman named Bethany

who lived in a Redwood tree

her little hut was something to see

perched like a toy inside the canopy

society had caused her to flee

to the giant tree in order to be free

a friend brought supplies to the tree

and never questioned her idiosyncrasy

and she lived there like a refugee

but happy as happy can be

for she was a nature devotee

who did her best to avoid reality

Gonzo Poem: Sign Your Name Right Here

if you believe in UFO’s and a magic mirror

sign your name right here

if you believe Bigfoot drinks beer

sign your name right here

if you think there’s no pollution in the atmosphere

sign your name right here

if you’re into kinky sex and like to domineer

sign your name right here

if your looking for a long career

sign your name right here

in order to make your wishes crystal clear

sign your name right here

if you enjoy getting attention with a Bronx cheer

sign your name right here

do you have days when things are unclear?

sign your name right here

have you ever thought about being a volunteer?

sign your name right here

A Small Town’s Pride

the residents of Rogueville loved listening to their bell ring out from the town’s highest tower, the church spire

but the bell had a history

it was a thing of mystery

it’s origin hotly debated

the bell was silver plated

over brass and steel

that mighty bell did peal

three times a day

calling people to pray

until the word got out

what the bell was about

a souvenir from a war

a symbol of the horror

so the town took down

their symbol of pride

sadly setting it aside

School Of Hard Knocks

when I was growing up my grandfather use to say

that boy is going to find out everything the hard way

if he comes out of his childhood alive

there’s a damn good chance he’ll survive

I was an eager student of the School of Hard Knocks

my troubles were never pebbles they were always rocks

taking the least traveled pathway had a price

I come close to losing my life twice

there was never really a choice for me

I’ve always been on the verge of tragedy

but in these later days of my life

I look back and appreciate the strife

and accept my past and my destiny

whatever that happens to be

There’s Got To Be More

chocolate ice cream and fudge sprinkled with a strawberry glaze, reading books, watching movies, playing board games on boring days,

dancing under the light of the moon, swimming naked in a hidden lagoon, wearing a funny costume

becoming a parent, politician, or playwright, creating a website, swimming in eternity pools all night,

prizes for running, jumping, and winning at Jeopardy, traveling to memorable places like France and Normandy, flying in planes that only hold three,

riding camels and horses in an exotic land, witnessing Yellowstone National Park’s geysers firsthand, walking on Mali’s white sand

hiking through the jungles of Peru, riding in a canoe, and learning Spanish too,

going to sports events, eating cabbage after it ferments, and living in tents,

but there’s got to be more

on some distant shore

my soul cries out

forevermore

Consequences

we cannot hide from our deeds

whether they’re good or bad

our actions have consequences

that either leave us happy or sad

the life moves we make

affect our journey

and the roads we take

a good path

or a mistake

call it karma

or call it fate

everything you do

comes back to you

love

or hate

The View From Eternity

souls sitting on sheer cliffs

like birds of prey

night and day

for eternity

their view goes on forever

unobstructed by reality

universes unfold like flowers

amidst meteor showers

a truly stunning display

in many a galaxy

far far away

In The Center

what’s in your center?

an enlightening epiphany

or more?

discovering your inner core?

a place to safely explore?

some say

the soul is your center

and gateway

to your spirit

that follows a pathway

up a celestial stairway

to heaven

but I wouldn’t know

I have a wayward soul

that wanders alone

seeking the center

of the universe

and it’s secrets

but

I still wonder why

I can never go home

no matter how hard I try

In The Age of The Sage

long before the final war

when forests were still green

and the waters in the rivers

ran blue

there was an age of wisdom

when a sage made his debut

teaching people the right thing to do

he appeared before young and old

and those that were smart

soon did as they were told

he gave them laws to live by

stressing equality

but these laws they chose to defy

and the sage went back into the sky

and mankind discovered the horror of war

and nothing was the same anymore

When No One Was Looking

he stood amidst the ruins of the city

a warrior raised with no pity

when no one was looking

a tear welled up in his eye

for all the men who had to die

she was as tough as could be

a corporate climber making money

but when no one was looking

she would cry

tired of being the bad “guy”

he was a professional fighter

who wanted to be a writer

when no one was looking

he proved he had what it took

and wrote a book
