Caterwauling

felines spill out into the neighborhood

when night falls because it’s time to prowl

and shock with a bloodcurdling howl

as they fight and mate

or look for prey to eliminate

cats are creatures of the night

eager to explore and eager to fight

they caterwaul like lost souls

on their nightly patrols

feline travelers on every street

ready to court or compete

but their nocturnal activities

bother some people’s sensitivities

who feel it would be just as well

if those cats went straight to hell!

Sea Tales

I met an friendly orca the other day

all she wanted to do was play

two left-tentacled octopuses I met

played their guitars in a watery duet

I was entertained one time by singing krill

swimming off the beautiful coast of Brazil

while surfing with bull sharks off of Bali

I discovered they were gossipy and silly

but I think my favorite tale

is when I rode a blue whale!

Goat Olympics

the competitors stood before the sheer cliff

stirring nervously

nimble hoofs shuffling silently

as they waited for the event to begin

their coats wet from rain

their goal to win

no path to show the way

during the sheer climb

that would take all day

but the mighty goats

looking to become

the greatest of all time

do it for the glory

that treacherous climb

to crown a champion

in the Goat Olympics

gaining fame for all time

My Iggy

we sit side by side in a state of serenity

my Iggy and me

he, a small version of a greyhound

with brown eyes that are profound

that look into my soul

his presence does console

we spend comfortable hours silently

contemplating many a mystery

my Iggy and me.

Cat Man Do

he tries to rescue feral and lost cats every day

wandering streets and every alleyway

prepared to help any stray

that comes his way

the cat man’s house is full of felines invited to stay

he doesn’t mind his sobriquet

his cat friends never lead him astray

as he goes about his eventful day

A Homily On Honey Badgers

their real name is Honey-Eater of the Cape

skunk-looking creatures unafraid of a snake

also known as honey badgers who have no fear

of any animal, big or small, who comes near

it’s wise to avoid these cousins of the weasel family

known for being quarrelsome, filthy and smelly

most people think honey is their favorite food

but it’s the bee larvae inside that are being skewed

honey badgers grunt, squeak, hiss and whine

and often leave, when frightened, a smelly trail behind

yes, they do have a sweet tooth for honey too

and they’re fierce fighters unafraid of coming after you!

In The Worlds of Night

when night falls worlds come alive

in dreams and reality

predators stalk the darkness to survive

and the prey becomes a casualty

creatures big and small that move at night

are masters at hiding anywhere

cleverly avoiding the moons light

and assuring their welfare

dreams are also denizens of the night

as people try to rest from a hard day

things like nightmares leave them uptight

causing them dismay

dreams can also be a wonderful experience

sought after by mystics and sages

spiritually enlightening and soulfully intense

dreams and reality are the inheritance of the ages

The Babies Eat Tonight

She squatted down on her haunches ready and alert

her thick wolf fur flecked with wet dirt

eyes never leaving the prey

the babies will eat tonight if she has her way

Her powerful muscles are ready

her hunting instincts honed and steady

in the den not far away

her pups haven’t eaten since yesterday

When the right moment came

during a light rain

she successfully seized her prey

now the babies would eat today

Anthropomorphism Blues

She sang like a nightingale to a murder of crows in the back rows while the rest of the audience froze

Singing those ‘ol Anthropomorphism Blues!

The chorus of cool cats backing her up took their que from people acting like animals in a zoo

Singing those ‘ol Anthropomorphism Blues!

Lion-hearted heroes chasing dastardly chickens in a deadly race while one weasel tears up the place with his bad-ass base

Singing those ‘ol Anthropomorphism Blues!

No one’s messing with the Monkey’s who are putting together their own blues band with a lead vixen vocalist for a one-night stand

Singing those ‘ol Anthropomorphism Blues!

The earthy sound of a trio of piglets grunting out the blues really brings out appreciative mews and moos

Singing those ‘ol Anthropomorphism Blues!

Curiosity

Cats haven’t cornered the market on curiosity despite folklore and owners who claim they have.

Inquisitiveness is universal in the animal kingdom. Scholars use curiosity to discover truths and natural laws. Curiosity is one of the building blocks for civilization and exploration.

Without the strong urge to know, there wouldn’t be inventions. No honorable mentions. No progress. No hope for the future. No discoveries.

But we don’t have to worry about that. Curiosity among all species comes with their survival packages, with one caveat:

Curiosity can cause grief, and sometimes kills.

It’s a wise animal that uses curiosity carefully.
