The Hitchhiker and the UFO

some people are meant to travel by whatever means

cars, trucks, buses, biking,

trains, planes, or hitchhiking

which was one man’s favorite mode

to take off a load

traveling free

across the country

was the only way to go

until one day when

the hitchhiker met a UFO

which offered him a ride

to wherever he wanted to go

so he took a quick tour of the galaxy

to see what wonders he could see

like the red dunes of Mars

and the shooting stars

with their ancient history

but the time soon came

to go back home again

with new traveling tales

of space and cosmic trails

Easy Glider

riding the wind like a bird

the ground far below blurred

but it’s no deterrent

for the easy glider riding the wind’s calm current

with a view of the beautiful world below

he knows he can land where he wants to go

the easy glider cruises airways defying death

knowing it could be his last breath

defiantly setting aside fear

high in the atmosphere

to experience what few others see

that high altitude beauty

Alien Gardens

have you ever wondered what will grow on Mars someday

when mankind lands on the planet’s harsh red clay?

in a distant future where humans can go anyplace

and are masters of planet-hopping in space

the alien landscapes will provide a place to grow

food and plants for any aficionado

the planet’s inhabitants teaching humans about their geography

opening up the doors to communication and community

imagine then a time of peace

lasting for eternity

Searching For What To Say

like a bloodhound on a safari of scents

I relentlessly stalk each moment of the day

searching for something new to say

I let my animal instincts lead the way

when seeking story’s to share each day

eagerly searching for mysteries

and histories to proudly display

I hope my hunt for knowledge

all these days, never goes away

Sea Tales

I met an friendly orca the other day

all she wanted to do was play

two left-tentacled octopuses I met

played their guitars in a watery duet

I was entertained one time by singing krill

swimming off the beautiful coast of Brazil

while surfing with bull sharks off of Bali

I discovered they were gossipy and silly

but I think my favorite tale

is when I rode a blue whale!

Traveling Time

pack your bag and let’s go

it’s traveling time

don’t ya know?

It doesn’t matter

where we go

what country we see

or chateau

it’s about the adventure

don’t ya know?

escape your status quo

in exotic lands

or a hidden archipelago

the decision is yours

don’t ya know?

Bright City Lights

city lights shinning so bright they light up the night, exposing activities you see in all cities. The harsh glow illuminates endless alleys and trash cans waiting for the morning light when they’ll be emptied of their rotten secrets and given new life.

skyscrapers stretch into the night sky like beacons burning brightly from a thousand rooms. Lights glowing like luminous ribbons on countless streets seeking to chase away stubborn shadows that escape the view of endless car’s headlights.

days turns into neon nights that defy the dark skies. People walking under an artificial glow in disguise. Petty thieves and gangsters clinging to the shadows like wraiths, waiting to catch unwary souls who venture beyond the incandescent safety of the radiant light.

tourists walking by glaring marquees that tease numerous delights in the always busy nights. So many things to see in the lucent city.

My Bangkok Tour Guide

Essay – 246 words

While walking down a street in the Kingdom of Thailand where ex-pats from around the world land, blending seamlessly into the local 1970 economy, I met a young boy with a man’s eyes.

He was probably ten – going onto forty – with worldly knowledge far beyond his tender years. Anuia was a frail street waif with the wisdom of the local marketplace for sale. He promised the best place to stay, my drug of choice, and prostitutes with breathless beauty, if I hired him throughout my stay.

We toured a banana plantation, and a red light district called
Pattaya, with outrageous sex acts they were not even considered risqué in the day. Creedance Clearwater Revival rocked the bars with “Looking Out My Backdoor.” I smoked some of the best weed in my life, comparing it to the Vietnamese strain that made you forget your name.

We watched kick fighter’s knock each other out, only to get up afterwards and respectfully bow to one another. Anuia shared his best curse words to get quick results, and bargained over every transaction like it might be his last. He was shrewd and a survivor, with no parents or family.

The thing that impressed me the most was he was always smiling – except when he negotiated a deal. His smile seemed to defy the life he led. When my time was up, and I had to go, he shook my hand, then turned to greet another group of visitors deplaning nearby.

Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained

250 words –

Woz waited by the doorway to the labyrinth for the green light to come on. He was a professional gamer who traveled around the galaxies taking on challenges created by the Game Changer. The challenges always incorporated alternate realities, and reality.

The red light was on a timer. When it changed Woz entered the maze of dimly lit tunnels and followed the directions written in laser lights on the smooth metal walls. This challenge involved finding a crystal key to open the door to eternity.

When Woz encountered a door he went in without hesitation. The inhabitants inside bowed and called him an angel. He ignored them and went back to the endless passages seeking the crystal key.

Eons passed in the lonely search. Worlds were created and destroyed. Civilizations rose and fell into dust. Woz wandered from one dimension to the next, always re-appearing in the luminous tunnels. Never losing sight of his goal to find the crystal key.

During a time of solar systems defying gravity for gamers like Woz, he emerged from the maze to witness the birth of a dwarf planet and discovered a crystal cave. Inside, there hung hundreds of identical crystal keys swaying to gentle hidden melodies. They were bathed in a blue light.

Because the Game Changer doesn’t play by any rules, he had nothing better to do than make fools of gamers like Woz, who saw the challenge for what it was, but still played the game. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

The Sea Dogs Chant

An adventurer am I

sailing the seven seas

until I die

chanting

give me wind and a blue sky!

and seas so calm

the days fly by

I am a sea dog

keeping the ship’s log

plotting places to go

it’s a good life you know

chanting

Give me wind and a blue sky

and seas so calm

the days fly by

On the bridge I stand proud

free and loud

a sea dog avowed

chanting

Give me wind and blue sky

and seas so calm

the days fly by
